The basics

What is marketing mix modeling?

Marketing mix modeling (MMM) is a statistical method that estimates how much each marketing channel, online and offline, contributes to sales, so you can decide where your next dollar should go.

Google Meridian is Google’s free, open-source MMM framework. It uses aggregated, privacy-safe data, with no cookies or user-level tracking, to estimate the incremental ROI and ROAS of every channel.

How Meridian’s model works

Meridian is a Bayesian model. It accounts for adstock, the way an ad’s effect carries over into later weeks, and saturation, the point where more spend stops adding much revenue. It can be calibrated with priors from lift studies, and it supports geo-level modeling and reach and frequency data.

The result is a set of response curves for each channel, incremental ROI with confidence intervals and an optimizer that recommends a budget mix. AdBeacon runs this for you on your own first-party data. Read the full guide to Meridian

MMM and MTA

MMM and MTA: the best of both worlds.

MMM is your strategic compass. MTA is your tactical navigator. AdBeacon gives you both, in one place.

MMM shows where your next dollar should go.

Marketing mix modeling looks at the big picture. It measures how every channel, online and offline, contributes to revenue so you can set budgets with confidence.

  • Budget allocation across every channel
  • Impact of offline media like TV and out-of-home
  • Long-term brand lift, not just last-click sales

Most platforms charge extra for MMM access. AdBeacon includes Google Meridian from day one.

On your own vs with AdBeacon

Meridian is free. Running it yourself is the hard part.

Here is what it takes to get Google’s Meridian MMM working, and what AdBeacon handles for you. For most brands, doing it alone is a dealbreaker.

Real impact example

How MMM changed one apparel brand’s budget.

The starting pointA DTC apparel brand optimized almost entirely for retargeting, because platform reports said it had the best ROAS.
What MMM revealedMeridian MMM showed prospecting campaigns were driving incremental new customers and higher lifetime value, while retargeting was mostly capturing sales that would have happened anyway.
What changedThe brand shifted budget to top-of-funnel campaigns and used MTA to keep retargeting efficient day to day. Profitability and customer acquisition both increased.

Built on Meridian, Google’s open-source MMM.

Meridian brings modern, transparent MMM methods to every marketer. AdBeacon removes the setup so you get the benefits without the build.

Advanced Bayesian modelingUses Bayesian causal inference to estimate the incremental impact of each channel. It models adstock (how ad effects carry over time) and saturation (diminishing returns), and can use priors from lift studies to calibrate results.
Granular and flexibleSupports geo-level hierarchical models for regional insights and flexible inputs, so you can combine online channels with offline media like TV and out-of-home.
Actionable insightsBudget allocation tools and an optimizer recommend spend across channels, and scenario planning runs “what if” simulations before you commit budget.
Credibility and standardizationDeveloped by Google Research and seeing growing adoption across the industry as a standard approach to marketing mix modeling.
Open-source and transparentMeridian’s code is public on GitHub, so models can be inspected and verified. No black box.

Google Meridian MMM and AdBeacon: FAQ

What is the difference between MMM and MTA?

Marketing mix modeling (MMM) uses aggregated spend, impressions and revenue over time to estimate how much each channel, online or offline, contributes to sales. It guides long-term budget allocation. Multi-touch attribution (MTA) uses click-level, first-party data to show which ads, campaigns and creatives drove each order, so you can optimize campaigns day to day.

Do I need both MMM and MTA?

Yes, for the most complete view. MMM is your strategic compass for budget planning across channels, including offline media and brand lift. MTA is your tactical navigator for real-time optimization. AdBeacon includes both in one account, so you can plan with MMM and execute with MTA.

What is Google Meridian?

Meridian is Google’s free, open-source marketing mix modeling framework. It uses Bayesian causal inference on aggregated, privacy-safe data to estimate the incremental ROI and ROAS of each marketing channel, with support for reach and frequency, geo-level modeling and calibration from lift studies.

Why is Meridian easier with AdBeacon?

Running Meridian yourself means weeks or months of API connections, data scientists to configure the model and hours spent cleaning historical data, with no real-time attribution to act on. AdBeacon connects your channels, collects and prepares the data automatically and shows Meridian’s results next to click-based attribution. No coding, no spreadsheets.

What data does Meridian MMM need?

Meridian works best with at least two years of history covering ad spend, impressions, conversions and revenue by channel, plus control factors such as seasonality and promotions. AdBeacon collects this from your connected ad platforms and store automatically.

Can Meridian measure offline channels like TV or out-of-home?

Yes. Meridian supports offline data inputs, so TV, out-of-home and other offline media can be modeled alongside digital channels to show their incremental impact on revenue.

How accurate is MTA after iOS 14?

Ad platform tracking lost accuracy after Apple’s iOS 14 privacy changes. AdBeacon’s MTA uses first-party, click-based tracking combined with Shopify and store order events, so attribution ties each sale to a real ad click instead of modeled platform estimates.

How often should I use MMM vs MTA?

Use MMM for quarterly and monthly planning, such as setting channel budgets and testing new channels. Use MTA daily and weekly to scale winning campaigns, refresh creative and cut wasted spend.

Which platforms does AdBeacon integrate with?

AdBeacon works with Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and custom stores, and connects to Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, Microsoft Ads, Amazon Ads, Klaviyo, GA4 and Recharge (beta).

How do I get started with Meridian MMM in AdBeacon?

Create an AdBeacon account, install the pixel and connect your ad channels and store. Setup is simple, with hands-on help from our team. Historical data populates within 24 hours, and your first Meridian results follow within days.

Is Meridian MMM really free with AdBeacon?

Yes. Google Meridian MMM is included in AdBeacon at no extra charge and stays free even after your 30-day trial ends. A credit card is required to create an account.

Do agencies get Meridian MMM for their clients?

Yes. AdBeacon’s Agency Launch and Agency Scaling plans include a Google Meridian MMM account, valued at $6,000, alongside click-based attribution for every brand the agency manages.
